Hard fought game at Brownacres in the sun.

I am writing this report with chest puffed out being immensely proud of all of the lads for victory against one of the 2 teams that beat us last year in the league.

We knew that Richmond would be tough opposition and that they play a fast, hard game and they wear their passion on their sleeve. It was definitely a day to step up, be counted and want to win the game more than the opposition.

Last year we lost to Richmond by intimidation, physicality and they exploited our weaknesses. This year we matched them in all areas of the park and showed that all of the training does pay off with technically a better scrum and the rucking was superior. Not taking anything away from Richmond at all as they are very strong and well drilled but somehow we managed to keep breaking them down.

Three or four phases would go keeping it tight then explosive pace and running lines from the backs to break through. Richmond had pace and guile and this showed a lot. When they broke they broke quickly and sent it to the fastest runner on the pitch (their 2 on the wing). This was a similar tactic of theirs last year when they beat us by over 20 points. Unfortunately this year our backs are fitter, faster and much more determined to secure the ball.

Captain Callum Roker kept everyone motivated throughout and ensured that all players knew their job and apart from a couple of injuries on the pitch we came through relatively unscathed.

I don’t normally comment about the individuals and the following is a one of but I thought commendation is due:

Callum Roker – best captains performance yet despite the opposition trying to take a trophy during the game (testical!). George Shannon – Great throws and determination throughout. Isaac Lamey – Aggressive running and didn’t give up at all. Bryn Hassan – Brilliant reading of the game, aggression and a new hair cut! Michael Caulder – Immense power and team play. Luca Metaireau – The best game I have seen you play with great prowess in the forwards. Ben Whiteman – Stand out performance with controlled aggression. Jordan Fernandez – Speed to the breakdown and aggression second to none. Alex Page – Brilliant ability at 8 and great passion for the game, They eye will definitely improve your looks!! Joe Vuchetich – Sub due to injury but showed amazing dedication by being willing to put yourself on the line anyway. Jack Morriss – Brilliant team spirit and willing at all times.

Jacob Jackson – The best game for you yet. A very controlled performance with excellent use of passing despite the pressure from Richmond. Aiden Coyne – Great wingers performance with immense tackling and attacks at any opportunity. Daniel Wellden – Speed and power which Richmond struggled with until the injury. Naheed Ahmed – Great to see him back, no-one got passed him at all. Joe Collyer – very impressive tackling and running display all game despite the flu. Marli Casemore – brilliant head on tackling at all times and great ability to ghost past people. David Jones – amazing game sense and joining the attacking line, no fear at all.

A great display on the day by all, a win and a bonus point!!!

Thanks to Steve Reed who stepped in to ref admirably at short notice.

The back room staff shouldn’t go unnoticed either, Sally Tyte-Slade (Manager and chef), Alan Keen (Coach and Brighton fan????), Karl Whiteman (forwards coach), Tim Page (Statto! and coach) who without all the squad could not function.

It was great to see supporters from other age groups and old Vandals down. This was very much appreciated by all of us.

Training Wednesday and then Gladiators next Sunday!!!

Well done all and roll on the next game.
